Indonesia | Bali on a budget! (Day 3 and 4)

Day 3 – Temples and sunset!

Our breakfast by the pool at our hotel in Ubub.
It was an early start today. After checking out from our hotel, we started our 45 minutes journey to Taman Ayun Temple (Megwi Water Temple). Taman Ayun Temple is one of the most attractive temples of Bali. It is situated in a beautiful park near Mengwi in the south of Bali. This temple was built in 1634 by the King of Mengwi as his family temple. It opens daily from 0800H till 1800H. Entrance fee: Rp15,000/per pax.

For lunch, we had tofu. We went to this restaurant called Café Tahu which served pretty much everything made from soybean. Highly recommendable. Location: Jl. Denpasar-Bedugul Km.37, Bedugul, Bali. Tel: +62 361 7459953.

Our next stop was Bratan Lake Temple or the local called it Pura Ulun Danu Bratan. This temple is located on the shores of Lake Bratan in the mountains near Bedugul. Lake Bratan is known as the Lake of Holy Mountain due to the fertility of this area. Located 1,200 m above sea level, it has a cold tropical climate. My take on Bratan Lake Temple: This is a must-visit place whenever you are in Bali. The view is just breathtaking. Entrance fee: Rp30,000/per pax.

Next, Bobby brought us for tea at Warung Kopi Bukit Hexon located at Jln.Raya Wanagiri (Munduk), Singaraja, Bali. We had banana fritters served with cheese and also great freshly brewed Balinese coffee. The view: MARVELOUS! Total spend was Rp66,000. It was a bit costly but the view was worth it!

A panoramic view at Warong Kopi Bukit Hexon. The black car was our ride for the entire trip!
Enjoying the view and our banana fritters!
To end our last evening in Bali, we headed off to the famous Tanah Lot. Tanah Lot is home to the pilgrimage temple Pura Tanah Lot (literally "Tanah Lot temple"). Entrance fee: Rp30,000/per pax. Tips: The best time to visit Tanah Lot is in the evening where you can enjoy a spectacular sunset. This place is very touristy, please be aware of pickpockets. We were all captivated and mesmerized with the view. Although we did not visit the temple (too many tourists and we were tired), we were all grateful just being there, taking in the stunning view.

The view and the sunset at Tanah Lot.
At around 1900H, we headed off to Kuta. Before checking in to our hotel, we decided to have a great Chinese halal dinner at Warung Pak Hadi – Chinese and Seafood located at Jl. Patih Jelantik 100, Kuta, Bali. Tel: +62361767735. Total spend for this dinner for 4 pax was only Rp151,000. After the scrumptious dinner, we checked in at Hotel Bounty Kuta. Our room rate was Rp 1,148,400/per night. Initially, we wanted to just enjoy our last night at this hotel but we were a bit disappointed as it turned out to be like a mini Ibiza during summer. Reason to that is because there were so many holiday goers by the pool shouting and getting drunk. Getting near that pool was a turnoff. Besides that, we were all exhausted and I was down with a fever! Boo me!

Day 4 – Krisna and Goodbye Bali!

I was still down with a slight fever but we’ve managed to check out sharp at 0900H after our continental buffet breakfast.  For our last excursion, Bobby brought us to Krishna. Krishna is a souvenir shop that sells Bali’s souvenir at a fixed price for a very reasonable rate. I personally think this is the best place to shop before getting on your flight. They provide wrapping services for only Rp5000/per box. Krishna is located at Jalan Pandu No.34A, Denpasar Tim., Bali. Tel: +62 361 8700601. After Krishna, we headed to Kuta Beach for a final shopping bargain before posing for the last time with our tour guide Bobby.

Indonesia | Bali on a budget! (Day 2)

Day 2 – The highlands!

Bobby was early as we have so many exciting things planned ahead. We’ve checked out from our hotel before starting our one hour journey to Ubub. Our first stop was Goa Gajah – The Elephant Cave. This place was built in the 9th century and is believed to serve as a sanctuary. There are no elephants here as the name suggest but it is a worshipping place for the locals Hindu. Entrance fee: Rp15,000/per pax and visitors need to put on the sarong if they come in with shorts. My take for Goa Gajah: I only love the fountain place and there is nothing much to see honestly. I would advise to skip this excursion if you have very limited time.

Next stop was Tirta Empul Temple. This place is a must! This Hindu temple near the town of Tampaksiring is well known for its holy water where Hindu Bali people go for purification. Entrance fee: Rp15,000/per pax.

A trip to Bali will not be complete without a visit to a coffee plantation. Bobby brought us to Satria Agrowisata where we were given an educational trip on coffee production. Besides that, we were also taught on how the famous luwak coffee is produced. This coffee is known to be the most expensive coffee in the world and this is no ordinary coffee! Believed it or not, this coffee is harvested from the luwak’s faeces! The best part of this visit was when we were given free sample testing on their products. There were almost 15 types of coffee and tea flavours! It was heaven. I’ve decided to try their luwak coffee and oh my a small cup of coffee was Rp50,000! Location: Jl. Raya Tampaksiring – Kintamani Br. Basangambu, Gianyar, Bali. Tel: +6108179793020.

Enjoying the freebies!

After the refreshing coffee tasting, we drove off to Kintamani to enjoy the dramatic views of the active volcano Mount Batur and the serene Lake Batur. We had our late lunch at a Warung Bakso overlooking the beautiful view and our meal was only Rp66,000. At around 1600H, we headed off to Tegalalang Rice Terrace. This place is a great place to spend a day taking in the sights and sounds of nature and a simpler, slower kind of life. For us, it was only a pit stop.

We continued our journey to Padangtegal for a visit to the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary. The daily opening time is from 0830H till 1800H. This place is homed to hundreds of long-tail macaque. Tips: Please take care of your belongings as there will be a high probability it will get stolen by the monkeys. Please do not feed the monkeys with the banana sold by the seller in the sanctuary. Feeding them will tend to make these monkeys too dependent on human. Entrance fee: Rp30,000/per pax (a bit costly). My take for Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary: You can give it a pass. Nothing much to see.

We finally settled down in our hotel after all the monkey business at the sanctuary. For our stay in Ubud, we've stayed at Jati 3 Bungalows and Spa (booked using booking.com) and the rate per night was only Rp500,000. Check out the awesome room! Did I mention it includes breakfast? Tips: If you happened to have more time at this place, I will reckon you to try their spa called Cempaka Spa. Affordable price. After a refreshing swim in the pool and a great satay feast that evening we’ve called it a day!

Indonesia | Bali on a budget! (Day 1)

Finally, it was time for an island getaway! This was my second trip to Bali. My first trip to Bali was on a business trip and I did not get the opportunity to tour around much. The best thing about this trip was to travel together with my two buddies, Din and Raja. Our trip was a 4 nights trip where we had hired a freelance tour guide named Bobby Sugianto. Bobby is very flexible and his tour is at a very reasonable price. When I say reasonable it’s SUPER REASONABLE! Bobby’s service includes transportation (where he will send and wait for you), a pre-planned/suggested itinerary which caters to your preferences and an airport pick up/sent off. He is highly recommendable for those looking to visit Bali anytime soon. Contact details will be provided at the end of this write-up.

All checked it and ready to fly. Bali here we come!
Before our trip to Bali, Bobby had provided us with itineraries for the top of the list must visit/do in Bali. We were left only to book both our flights and accommodations. We flew using Airasia where we've managed to get return tickets for only MYR322/per pax. We've decided to move the hotel every night to have a feel of different services.

Nasi Ramesh and my all-time favourite - Teh Botol.
We flew on the last flight departing from KLIA2 on the 31st October 2014 and we only arrived at Ngurah Rai Denpasar International Airport past midnight. Bobby was already waiting for us at the airport. There were many changes at the airport since the last time I’ve visited Bali in 2012. Before checking in at our hotel, Bobby brought us for a late-night supper where we had nasi Ramesh. Oh my, that was spicy! Every time I am in Indonesia, I will definitely go with Teh Botol – tea in the bottle. One thing I love whenever I travel to Indonesia is that food is super cheap! Our meal for three was only Rp57,000! For our first and second night in Bali, we’ve booked the S8 Suardana Hotel located in Kuta. The room was cosy and it even has a small kitchen for cooking! It looks like a small service apartment. The 2 nights stay for 3 pax only cost us MYR208!

Day 1 – Beaches and cultures

An early morning dip to start the day at the hotel.
Our first destination was to Tanjong Benoa, south of Kuta. Tanjong Benoa is well known for water sports activities and also the famous Turtle Island. One good thing when you have Bobby as your guide is that you can enjoy the local price (not all tourist site are applicable). After discussing on the excursion that morning, we’ve decided to visit the Turtle Island (on a glass view motorboat) together. Tips: There will be another extra Rp5,000/per pax upon entering the Turtle Farm for conservation fee.  As for the water sports, Din and Raja decided to try the flying fish and I’ve decided to go for the paragliding. Total costs for all our excursions was only Rp1,650,000. My take for Turtle Island: I think it was too commercialized. Turtles were too dependent. I cannot imagine if these turtles were to be released into the wild, what will be their chance of surviving. Another thing I would like to highlight was to have stricter rules. The reason said is because some tourists were not handling the sea turtles well. Some were lifting the turtles up for a picture and just chucking them down after they were done. Boo them!

My expression tells a lot on this visit.
The paragliding was awesome. I highly recommend this activity as this will give you the chance to have an aerial view of Tanjong Benoa. The flying fish on the other hand, (based on Din and Raja’s experience) gave a great view but it involves lots of stamina.

After a great kick-off in the morning, we went off for lunch. Bobby brought us to Warung Ibu Oki for chicken rice and hell it was spicy. Total spend for lunch was only Rp25,000. Later that afternoon, we headed off to Pandawa Beach. Pandawa is located in the village of Kutuh, Southern Bali. It is normally referred to as the secret beach. There were not many tourists there and the view was picturesque perfect. Tips: If you are looking for a quiet spot this beach should be on top of your list. We spend the afternoon chilling and enjoying our ice coffee and rojak buah – fruit salad with prawn paste sauce.

For our next stop, we headed off to another beach called Suluban Beach or famously known as Blue Point Beach which was a 35 minutes’ drive from Pandawa. Blue Point Beach was jam-packed with surfers but the view here was stunning. If I was given an option, I would prefer to stay longer at Pandawa Beach.

The highlight for our first day will be the famous Uluwatu Temple. Entrance fee: Rp20,000/per pax. To enter this heritage site it is compulsory to dress appropriately as it served as the local worshipped place. We were all provided with sarongs and Bobby taught us how to tie it like the Balinese. The view at the Uluwatu Temple was divine. As it was almost dawn, we quickly grabbed our ticket for the Kecak and Fire Dance performance. The ticket was only Rp100,000/per pax. Tips: Try to get the tickets earlier (say 1730H)  and secure the best seat (facing the sunset). For me, it was so surreal to experience firsthand one of Bali’s famous traditional culture performance. The show lasted for almost 2 hours and man we were starving!

We in our sarongs. Just getting in the mood.

Dinner that night was special. Bobby brought us to Jimbaran Bay. The setting was just stunning! It was by the beach. The place sells itself. However, a night out like this is usually very pricey. There were many seafood restaurants to choose from but we've decided to go with The Cuisine – Fresh grill seafood restaurant.  Tips: Go with a set meal and usually a set meal can feed up to 4 pax. As we've expected our meal for that night was super expensive! We've forked out a total of Rp487,000! Oh well, it’s a once in a lifetime experience! The night ended with all of us feeling knackered and we went to bed quite early. Tomorrow, to the north we go!

Our so-called "romantic" dinner by the beach excluding Din because he was busy taking this photo.
